Sejarah Plat Nomor Kendaraan Di Indonesia
SEMARANG, jurnaljateng.id, Kalau kita menilik sejarah plat nomor yang ada di Indonesia, memang tidak bisa lepas dari sejarah kedatangan bangsa Inggris yang datang ke Indonesia.
Belanda yang saat itu dikuasai oleh Perancis selama perang Napoleon membuat Inggris berusaha mencegah agar daerah koloni negara yang kini berada dibawah wilayah Perancis seperti Indies (sekarang Indonesia) tidak jatuh dalam kekuasaanya. Lebih tepatnya tahun 1810, 15.600 tentara Inggris yang datang ke Batavia dengan tujuan merebut Jawa dari tangan Belanda.
Tentara Inggris dengan menaiki 60 armada kapal dari daerah koloninya di India terbagi dalam 26 batalyon yang dinamai dengan huruf A-Z.
Inggris dengan Batalyon B nya berhasil merebut dan menduduki Batavia. Setelah mendudukinya Inggris membuat aturan mengenai kereta kuda yang digunakan agar bisa di kenali mana kereta musuh dan mana yang tidak. Inggris memberi tanda huruf B karena karena wilayah Batavia direbut oleh pasukan batalyon B. Penomoran sama seperti saat ini, dimana huruf depan menggunakan huruf B dan dikuti angka kemudian di akhiri dengan huruf lagi. Hanya saja angka yang tercetak ada 5 digit dimana dibelakang angka tadi ditambah huruf A untuk Annex (tambahan) atau C untuk Cargo.
Setelah Batavia dikuasai, selanjutnya wilayah yang diduduki pasukan Inggris adalah Banten. Wilayah banten di duduki pasukan Inggris dari Batalyon A. Seperti juga Batavia, Kereta kuda yang digunakan Batalyon A ditandai dengan kode A.
Begitu juga untuk wilaya-wilaya yang lain. Selanjutnya wilayah yang direbut Inggris dan diduduki adalah Surabaya dengan batalyon L nya dan Madura dengan batalyon M pada tanggal 27 Agustus 1811. Wilayah-wilayah yang yang lain juga sudah mulai direbut dan diduduki batalyon sesuai dengan kode Huruf depan plat nomor kendaraan yang dipakai saat sekarang.
Bahkan kota-kota yang memiliki kemajuan yang pesat dan startegis saat itu tidak luput dari target penguasaan pasukan Inggris. Batalyon G bergerak menuju Pekalongan karena pekalongan saat itu menjadi daerah termaju di daerah pantura bagian barat. Disini Batalyon G melucuti senjata pasukan Belanda dan menduduki Pekalongan sehingga kode Huruf G digunakan untuk menandai kereta Pasukan Batalyon G. Hingga sekarang kode huruf G digunakan untuk tanda huruf Awalan plat nomor Pekalongan.
Namun demikian ada yang berbeda untuk kode abjad yang digunakan untuk daerah magelang menggunakan Kode AA, Yogyakarta AB dan Solo AD karena memiliki dua abjad.
Hal tersebut karena daerah-daerah tersebut masih menjadi wilayah Kasultanan Mataram belum menjadi wilayah Belanda. Namun sejak Kasultanan menyerah dan bergabung dengan Inggris, juga diberlakukan sama dengan daerah-daerah lain untuk kode kereta yang digunakan sesuai dengan Batalyon yang mendudukinya. Magelang menggunakan Kode AA karena Batalyon yang menduduki adalah Batalyon A, Yogyakarta di duduki Batalyon A dan B sehingga kode Kereta yang digunakan AB dan Solo atau Surakarta AD. Begitu juga dengan daerah-daerah lain diberlakukan sama.
Setelah Jawa di duduki dan di kuasai Inggris, Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles membentuk wilayah administrasi Karesidenan sesuai dengan kode batalyon yang mendudukinya.
Ketika Belanda kembali ke Indonesia pada tahun 1816 kode abjad tersebut tetap digunakan dan bahkan meluas hingga ke daerah-daerah di luar Pulau Jawa.
Plat Nomor di berbagai wilayah di Indonesia dapat di bedakan sesuai dengan daerah Karesidenan yang dulunya di tetapkan oleh Inggris.
Kode Abjad yang digunakan masih terbagi lagi sesuai dengan kabupaten atau kota masing-masing diakhir plat nomor. Misalnya untuk Plat Awal H Karesidenan Semarang, Akhir S semarang Kota, E Demak, B Salatiga, C Kabupaten Semarang.
Untuk Kode W dan Z memiliki sejarah tersendiri, dimana tidak mengikuti kode Batalyon tersebut.(HEND)
